‘How People Attacked Me Over Mama Monica Movie Role’ — Blessing Onwukwe

Nollywood actress Blessing Onwukwe has opened up about the intense reactions she received after playing “Mama Monica” in the movie Monica, which has recorded over 16 million views on YouTube.

The film, produced by Uche Montana and featuring her in the lead role, centres on family pressure, responsibility, and societal expectations. Onwukwe’s portrayal of a strict and emotionally demanding mother sparked heated conversations online, with many viewers reacting strongly to the character.

Speaking in an interview with Sunday Scoop, the actress admitted she expected attention from the role but did not anticipate the level of personal criticism she encountered.

“I expected it, but I guess I didn’t think they would attack me personally. Some actually forgot it was a movie role. But at some point, I said it’s fine, as long as it’s not dangerous,” she said.

Despite the backlash, Onwukwe described the experience as a major turning point in her career, saying the role has brought increased recognition.

“It’s been a big boost. It just confirms what I already know — this is what I am called to do,” she added.

The actress also spoke about the lessons highlighted in the movie, especially concerning parenting and family responsibilities.

“Parents, stop burdening your kids with responsibility too early in life. It’s not your first child’s responsibility to raise your other kids. You choose to have kids. Have the amount of kids you can raise,” she said.

Prompt News reports she further advised women to prioritise their own future while supporting family members.

“Ladies, while you are helping your family, don’t neglect yourself. Time flies,” she added.

Reflecting on the role, Onwukwe revealed that it stretched her emotionally and professionally more than any previous performance.

“Yes, it did. I know I have played wicked roles, but nothing as deep as this. I had to interpret that role, and people loved it,” she said.
