Malawi captain Tabitha Chawinga has urged the Scorchers to play without fear when they take on defending champions Nigeria in their opening match of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, Prompt News Online reports.
The debutants will make history by featuring in their first-ever WAFCON match against the Super Falcons at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat on Tuesday night.
The Group C encounter is scheduled to kick off at 9pm Nigeria time.
Nigeria, record 10-time African champions, head into the contest as overwhelming favourites, making it a classic David-versus-Goliath battle.
Despite the daunting challenge, Chawinga believes Malawi must approach the game with confidence and refuse to be intimidated by their illustrious opponents.
The prolific forward, who will lead the Scorchers’ attack alongside her sister, Temwa Chawinga, insisted that Malawi must avoid any inferiority complex if they are to compete effectively against Justine Madugu’s side.
“It was my dream to play in the WAFCON. The time has come. We know Nigeria’s worth,” Chawinga was quoted by CAFonline.
” They are a great nation but we must focus on ourselves. Our players need to compete without any inferiority complex.”
