Students of ICT Adegbenro Polytechnic, Ewekoro, Ogun State, on Tuesday staged a protest following the killing of a final year Higher National Diploma student during a robbery attack near the institution.
The demonstration, which disrupted traffic along the Lagos Abeokuta Expressway for several hours, was sparked by the death of the HND II Marketing student during an overnight attack in the Eruku community, located close to the campus.
The protesting students alleged that robberies have become frequent around the institution, particularly along routes leading to and from the school.
They called on the Ogun State Government and security agencies to strengthen security in the area, insisting that repeated complaints had yielded little response.
According to the students, the deceased was attacked by armed robbers, while several others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment in hospital.
They described the latest incident as another tragic consequence of worsening insecurity around the campus.
Following the attack, the management of the institution postponed examinations scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.
In a statement signed by the Chairman of the Timetable, Examination and Academic Calendar Committee, Gideon Adekunle, the school said the decision was taken to honour the deceased and allow affected students time to recover emotionally.
The statement explained that examinations would resume on Friday, July 30, while a new timetable for the postponed papers would be announced later.
The Students’ Union Government President, Comrade Owoigbe Blessing, said the attack occurred around midnight, claiming that another female student suffered severe injuries, while a male student who was shot remains hospitalised.
She appealed to the state government to improve security around the institution, stressing that the latest incident was not an isolated case but part of a recurring pattern of violent attacks on students living in the area.
Also reacting, the Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Students in Ogun State, Comrade Olabode Faruq Success, condemned the persistent insecurity around tertiary institutions across the state.
He urged Governor Dapo Abiodun to deploy more security personnel to campuses and surrounding communities, insisting that students should not lose their lives while pursuing their education.
According to him, security patrols involving the police and local vigilantes should be intensified around student hostels and other vulnerable locations to prevent further attacks.
When contacted, the Ogun State Police Command confirmed that officers had been deployed to the scene of the protest.
