Afrobeats star Davido has stressed the importance of education, saying it is wrong for people to dismiss schooling as a scam despite the success stories of individuals who thrived without formal education.
The singer, whose real name is David Adeleke, spoke during a visit to Babcock University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music in 2015.
Davido said completing his education remains one of his proudest achievements and something he often mentions among colleagues in the entertainment industry.
“It’s been bragging rights for me among my colleagues. I am always quick to tell them that I went to school. It is something I’m happy that I ended up doing,” he said.
The music star explained that balancing academics with his rapidly growing music career was difficult at the time, admitting that he almost abandoned his studies. However, he credited the support of his father, billionaire businessman Dr Adedeji Adeleke, family members and some lecturers for encouraging him to finish the programme.
Reflecting on his experience at the university, Davido said discipline was one of the biggest lessons he gained there, aside from meeting his wife, Chioma.
“Sometimes, I’ll be like, auntie, I’m leaving, I’m going, but she would say, ‘David, be patient and just finish,’ and I ended up finishing,” he recalled.
The award-winning singer also announced plans to invest in the university’s music department by helping to build a dedicated structure equipped with modern facilities and standard studio equipment.

“The music department is what I want to expand. I feel like it should be a standalone building,” he said.
“I just personally built a high-class standard music studio in Lagos, so we are ready to donate and give back to the school and make sure we have proper standard equipment because music is oil right now in Nigeria. Creativity right now is oil.”
Prompt News reports Davido added that he hoped discussions with the university management would make the project a reality before the end of the year.
Speaking further, the singer advised young Nigerians to remain focused on their talents and pursue excellence in whatever field they choose.
“Nigerian youth must believe in themselves, work on their craft fully. Whatever you are doing — whether it’s music, sports, journalism or engineering — push yourself, love what you are doing and most importantly, love God too,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Afolarin Ojewole, described Davido as a worthy ambassador of the institution and praised his achievements in the global music industry.
