A wave of unexpected visa cancellations has thrown hundreds of international students across the United States into uncertainty, with many facing sudden termination of their legal status.
As reported by Vanguard, the move has caused widespread confusion and anxiety on college campuses nationwide.
Boston-based immigration attorney Matthew Maiona noted the pace of the cancellations has rapidly increased, calling the situation “fast and furious.”
According to a review by the Associated Press, at least 901 students from 128 colleges have been affected so far. Advocacy groups believe the actual number could be even higher.
While a large number of the affected students are from India and China, attorneys say the crackdown appears to be widespread, affecting students from various regions.
In several cases, students were reportedly penalized for minor infractions, including traffic violations.
Four students in Michigan have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government, alleging their legal status was revoked without proper explanation.
Similar legal actions are being pursued in other states, and judges in places such as New Hampshire, Wisconsin, and Montana have temporarily reinstated some students’ statuses.
Unlike past practices, universities are now discovering terminations through the federal immigration database—often before the students themselves are officially notified.
This procedural change has left many students, some on the verge of graduation or beginning employment, uncertain about their futures.
With no formal statements yet from the U.S. State Department or the Department of Homeland Security, anxiety continues to rise.
Some students have been told to leave the country, while others are staying and appealing in hopes of avoiding detention or deportation.
As uncertainty grows, many international students are making adjustments to their daily routines—keeping immigration documents on hand and preparing for potential legal complications.
A Chinese Ph.D. student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill summed up the prevailing mood: “It’s scary.
You don’t know if you’ll be the next one.”
