The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended a 26-year-old man, Chibuike Anikpe, for allegedly stabbing his girlfriend, Ogochukwu Mmadubugwu, to death in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area.
Police spokesman, Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, noting that operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department arrested the suspect on January 7.
According to Ikenga, early rumours suggesting that the killing was linked to persons Anikpe reportedly owed money were completely false.
He said preliminary interrogation showed that the suspect admitted attacking the 35-year-old woman at her residence on December 9, 2025, after accusing her of being unfaithful.
Ikenga added that Anikpe also confessed to planting a note alleging he had been kidnapped by creditors—an attempt to throw investigators off his trail.
The police spokesman said the suspect further told investigators he acted out of emotional distress and claimed he was frustrated after investing heavily in the deceased.
Ikenga confirmed that detectives had visited the morgue where the victim’s remains were kept, adding that the case had reignited discussions around domestic violence and growing tensions in personal relationships.
He urged members of the public to report early warning signs of abuse, stressing that disagreements should be resolved through lawful means rather than violence.

The suspect, he said, would be arraigned upon completion of investigations.
