Nigerian Afrobeats star Adekunle Gold has spoken candidly about the challenges of living with sickle cell disease and the stigma he often faces because of the condition.
In a recent interview with media personality Angela Yee, the Orente singer said many people react with fear or pity whenever he reveals he is battling sickle cell disorder, often acting as though he may not survive for long.
The singer also reflected on one of the most painful moments of his life, recalling a severe sickle cell crisis he experienced at the age of 20.
“At 20, I had the craziest crisis of my life. I told God to take my life. And my mom couldn’t even rebuke me. Normally, she would but that night, it got to a point where it felt like the only thing that makes sense should just happen,” he recalled.

Prompt News reports Adekunle Gold explained that the pain during the crisis became so intense that even his mother, who would usually encourage him during difficult moments, was unable to object when he expressed a desire to die.
Despite the difficult experiences, the award-winning singer said he remains thankful to God for the strength to keep fighting and surviving the illness.
