President Bola Tinubu has departed Paris, France, for Nigeria after spending about 30 days outside the country.
Tinubu left Abuja for Europe on August 30 for his annual leave and was initially expected to return after 21 days. His return was subsequently rescheduled twice.
The prolonged absence of the President had attracted criticism from opposition parties, which called for greater clarification over his whereabouts and health.
However, Tinubu’s Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed on Tuesday that the President had commenced his journey back to Nigeria from Paris.
Onanuga said the presidential aircraft was expected to land at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, later on Tuesday.
According to him, Tinubu decided to return through Lagos before proceeding to Abuja in order to honour the memory of the late Chief MKO Abiola, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s struggle for democracy.
The President’s return marks the end of his extended stay in Europe, which lasted longer than the 21-day period initially announced for his annual leave.
