An eight-month pregnant woman, Harira Aliyu, has approached a Shari’a Court in Rigasa, Kaduna State, seeking an order compelling her former husband, Nasiru Al-Hassan, to provide financial support for her upkeep and that of their unborn child.
Aliyu also asked the court to formally recognise a divorce pronouncement allegedly made by Al-Hassan in March.
The complainant told the court that since their separation, her former husband had only sent money for her maintenance for two months.
She said she was due to give birth in about a month and appealed to the court to compel Al-Hassan to continue providing for her until she delivered.
“I am eight months pregnant. Since our divorce in March, he has only sent money for two months to support me and our unborn child,” she told the court.
Responding through his counsel, Abubakar Sani, Al-Hassan said he had only recently been briefed about the matter and needed additional time to prepare his response.
Sani therefore appealed to the court for an adjournment to enable him to respond adequately to the petition.
The judge, Malam Mukhtar Aliyu, subsequently adjourned the case for further hearing.
