Nigerian music producer and record executive Don Jazzy has opened up about one of the most challenging periods in his career, revealing that he nearly abandoned music following the sudden breakup of Mo’Hits Records in 2012.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, the Mavin Records boss recalled that the fallout between him and D’banj, his then business partner, left him so disheartened that he contemplated relocating abroad.
However, encouragement from friends gave him the strength to stay and rebuild his career.
“When Mo’Hits ended, I thought that was it. I almost packed up to move abroad. But friends encouraged me to stay and start again, and Mavin Records was born. Since then, I’ve learned not to let anything break me,” Don Jazzy shared.

The end of Mo’Hits, which had produced several hits and stars, marked a turning point for the veteran producer.
Prompt News reports shortly after the split, he founded Mavin Records, which became home to both former Mo’Hits acts such as Dr SID, D’Prince, and Wande Coal, as well as a new wave of talents including Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, Di’ja, and Korede Bello.
Today, Mavin Records boasts some of the biggest names in Afrobeats, including Rema, Ayra Starr, Ladipoe, Crayon, Boy Spyce, Magixx, Bayanni, Johnny Drille, and DJ Big N.
In 2024, Universal Music Group acquired a majority stake in Mavin Global, a move that has further positioned the label for global growth and dominance in the music industry.
