PORT HARCOURT – National Hospital Abuja has commended Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited and its joint venture partners for their sustained support for cancer care in Nigeria, describing the venture partners’ intervention as transformative in restoring access to life-saving radiotherapy services for thousands of patients across Nigeria and the wider West African sub-region.

The commendation came during a courtesy visit by the Chief Medical Director of National Hospital Abuja, Prof. Muhammad Raji Mahmud, and members of the hospital’s management team to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Renaissance, Tony Attah, and members of Renaissance’s leadership team at Renaissance headquarters in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Speaking during the visit, Prof. Mahmud recalled the difficult circumstances faced by the hospital when its cancer treatment equipment became non-operational, leaving many patients without access to critical care.

“We had lost hope before we contacted Renaissance. Our machines were down and it affected the treatment of patients. It was a difficult period, and after considering the options available to us, we reached out to Renaissance,” he said.

He noted that Renaissance’s support, including funding that enabled the continued operation and maintenance of the hospital’s Linear Accelerator (LINAC) radiotherapy machine, had a profound impact on the hospital’s cancer care delivery.

“The $300,000 support has touched lives immensely. Renaissance has done enormously well not only for Nigeria, but for the entire West African sub-region because patients come here from across the region for treatment,” he added.

Prof. Mahmud also praised Renaissance’s culture and values, describing the warmth, respect and humility demonstrated by the company despite its significant contributions to healthcare development.

Since the partnership was strengthened through the funding by Renaissance, National Hospital Abuja’s Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology has recorded remarkable improvements in cancer care delivery. Between January and September 2026, the facility treated approximately 450 cancer patients, with nearly two-thirds receiving treatment with curative intent. Patients ranged in age from three to 100 years old, including six children, while treatment default rates remained exceptionally low, with only six patients discontinuing treatment between January and August. The programme supported treatment for patients battling a wide range of cancers, including breast, prostate, cervical, head and neck cancers, with breast cancer accounting for 44 percent of cases treated.

The impact of the partnership extends beyond patient numbers. According to hospital data, a full course of radical breast cancer radiotherapy at National Hospital Abuja costs approximately ₦800,000, compared with about ₦1.2 million at some centres and more than ₦3 million at others, making it one of the most affordable radiotherapy centres in Nigeria.

Responding, Renaissance Managing Director and CEO, Tony Attah, thanked the hospital’s leadership for giving the company and its joint venture partners the opportunity to contribute to a cause that directly impacts lives.

“On behalf of our joint venture partners, our Board and management team, we appreciate the opportunity to partner with National Hospital Abuja to improve healthcare outcomes and touch lives. There are many examples that show that having money alone is not enough. The real privilege is having the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives,” Attah said.

He also commended Prof. Mahmud’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

“I must acknowledge your personal leadership. When we met with the Honourable Minister last year, he remarked that despite opportunities to practise anywhere in the world, you chose to remain here and serve. That speaks to your character and commitment, and it is highly commendable.”

Attah further recognised the contribution of Renaissance’s Joint Venture partners in supporting healthcare initiatives and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to sustaining the partnership with the hospital.

“We appreciate the role of our Joint Venture partners in making this impact possible. As we look to the future, we are ready to deepen this collaboration. The next phase of our discussions will focus not only on maintenance and repair, but also on long-term equipment replacement, sustainability and ensuring that patients continue to have access to world-class cancer treatment services.”

The visit also provided an opportunity for both organisations to discuss the future of cancer care delivery in Nigeria, including opportunities to strengthen healthcare infrastructure, improve equipment reliability and expand access to affordable treatment for patients.
