Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy has set a new milestone by becoming the African artiste with the highest number of appearances on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The Afrofusion star, born Damini Ogulu, now holds nine entries on the chart, moving ahead of fellow Nigerian singer Tems, who previously shared the record with eight entries.
His latest achievement came through Dai Dai, the official soundtrack of the ongoing FIFA World Cup, recorded alongside Colombian music star Shakira.
The song entered this week’s Billboard Hot 100 at number 75, giving Burna Boy the outright record.
Before the collaboration, Shakira had spoken publicly about her desire to work with the Nigerian artiste.
“It was very easy to come up with the melody, the lyrics, the concept, and then obviously when I had Burna Boy recorded, that was like the cherry on top. I always wanted to do something with Burna, and I think that his voice just takes it to another level,” she said.
The pair also delivered a live performance of the song at the opening ceremony of the World Cup, helping expand its international reach.
