Operatives of the Abia State Police Command have recovered 28 human skulls and assorted bones from two suspected criminal hideouts in forests in Umunneochi Local Government Area of the state.
The remains were discovered during a joint operation at hideouts located in Umuaku-Isuochi and Nneato forests, where the police said suspected kidnappers and other criminal elements had been operating.
The operation involved personnel from the Violent Crime Response Unit, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Anti-Cultism Unit, Intelligence Response Squad, Isuochi Divisional Police Station and Rapid Response Squad.
The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, disclosed the development on Sunday.
Chinaka said the operation was conducted as part of intelligence-led raids across the state under the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Afolabi.
She said the exercise was being carried out under the theme, “Operation No Hideout for Criminal Elements in the State.”
According to her, the suspects fled into the surrounding forest when the tactical teams arrived at the camps, leading to the dismantling of the hideouts.
She said, “A total of 28 human skulls and bones, suspected to be those of kidnapping victims, were recovered.
Investigation is ongoing, while monitoring of the area continues, and efforts are intensified to apprehend the fleeing suspects.”
The police spokesperson added that the Commissioner of Police had reaffirmed the command’s commitment to preventing criminal elements from using Abia as a base for their activities.
The command also appealed to residents to cooperate with the police by providing timely information on suspicious activities and reporting security concerns to the nearest police station.do Oyeyemi
