Morocco defender Noussair Mazraoui has praised his side’s resilience following their dramatic penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands at the 2026 FIFA World Cup Prompt News Online reports.

The Atlas Lions secured their place in the Round of 16 after edging past the Dutch in a pulsating contest at Monterrey Stadium.

The Netherlands looked to be heading for victory after Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute, finishing off a pass from Crysencio Summerville.

However, Morocco struck back late on when substitute Issa Diop rose highest to power home Chemsdine Talbi’s inviting cross from the left, forcing the match into extra time.

Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou proved the hero in the ensuing shootout, producing a crucial save to deny Summerville after both teams had each missed two penalties. Ismael Saibari then calmly converted the decisive spot-kick to seal Morocco’s victory and book a Round of 16 meeting with tournament co-hosts Canada in Houston on 4 July.

Mazraoui expressed delight after Morocco secured their place in the next round.

“A really tough game against a really tough opponent. One of the best opponents you can face in the world,” Mazraoui was quoted by FIFA.com.

“It’s a top 10 of the world, I think a contender to win eventually the World Cup. The way that we managed to win today is a huge acknowledgment for us as a national team, of course.”
