The Ogun State Community, Social Orientation and Safety Corps, popularly known as So-Safe Corps, has arrested a 29-year-old man, Salaudeen Toheeb, over the alleged rape of a 22-year-old woman who had earlier been reported missing by her family.
The woman, identified as Boluwatife, was reportedly found in Toheeb’s custody at Olohunda, Ota, Ogun State, after security operatives received information about her whereabouts.
The State Commander of the Corps, Commander Soji Ganzallo, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday by the Director of Information and Public Relations, ACC Adegunwa Adegbuyi.
According to the statement, the Divisional Officer of the Alagbon Division, SC Ibrahim Badru, received information around 4pm on Saturday that a man was seen moving around with a girl who was being searched for by her family.
Acting on the information, operatives of the Corps reportedly traced the suspect and arrested him, while the young woman was rescued.
During preliminary questioning, Toheeb allegedly told the operatives that he encountered Boluwatife while riding his motorcycle on Thursday evening and approached her after she reportedly said she was distressed and had nowhere to go.
The suspect allegedly took her to his residence, bought her food and later attempted to have sexual intercourse with her.
The woman reportedly resisted the attempt, but the suspect was alleged to have forced himself on her in the early hours of Friday.
The statement added that Toheeb later took the woman out of the house to charge his phone, where residents who recognised her reportedly alerted her father.
Meanwhile, the victim’s father has requested that the case be transferred to the police for further investigation, saying his daughter had left home with five mobile phones and about N17,000 cash.
He reportedly urged investigators to establish what happened to the phones and money in addition to investigating the circumstances surrounding his daughter’s disappearance and alleged assault.
The So-Safe Corps said the suspect and the victim had subsequently been handed over to the Owode-Yewa Divisional Headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force for discreet investigation and possible prosecution.
