FIFA has dismissed South Africa’s appeal against the three-match suspension imposed on midfielder Themba Zwane, the South African Football Association (SAFA) confirmed on Thursday, Prompt News Online reports.
“We are disappointed with the outcome of our appeal because we firmly believe the punishment is significantly harsher than the offence Themba is alleged to have committed,” SAFA said in an official statement.
Zwane was handed the suspension by FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee after being shown a red card during South Africa’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against co-hosts Mexico last week.
The midfielder is set to serve the final match of his ban when South Africa take on Canada in the Round of 32 in Los Angeles on Sunday.
In a boost for Bafana Bafana, midfielder Teboho Mokoena returns to the squad after serving a one-match suspension in South Africa’s previous fixture against South Korea.
Bafana Bafana booked a place in the Round of 32 after a 1-0 victory over Korea Republic on Thursday.
