Tournament newcomers Cabo Verde produced one of the most remarkable results in recent football history, holding global giants Spain to a hard-fought 0-0 draw.
Representing a nation of just over 500,000 people, the Blue Sharks delivered a disciplined and courageous display against Luis de la Fuente’s star-studded side, earning a result that will resonate across the football world.
As expected, Spain dominated possession from the outset, but Cabo Verde’s superb organisation and unwavering determination frustrated La Roja throughout the contest.
Spain came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half when Ferran Torres rattled the crossbar after being picked out by Marc Cucurella.
The rebound fell kindly to Mikel Oyarzabal, whose instinctive header was brilliantly kept out by veteran goalkeeper Vozinha.

In a bid to spark his side into life, De la Fuente introduced teenage sensation Lamine Yamal in the 71st minute.
The Barcelona star immediately injected greater pace and unpredictability into Spain’s attacks, yet Cabo Verde continued to defend resolutely, limiting the European heavyweights to half-chances.
Oyarzabal had one final opportunity to snatch victory for Spain in the closing stages, but his effort drifted off target as Cabo Verde held firm to secure a sensational point and one of the greatest results in the nation’s football history.
