The Kano State Government has approved N1.5 billion for the conduct of a mass wedding programme that will cater for 1,500 couples across the state.
The Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Corps, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists in Kano, stating that preparations for the exercise were already at an advanced stage.
Daurawa said prospective couples were currently undergoing mandatory medical screening, including tests for HIV, hepatitis, pregnancy and genotype compatibility, as part of the requirements for participation in the programme.
According to him, the government plans to spend about N1 million on each couple, covering household essentials and empowerment support.
He explained that beneficiaries would receive items such as beds, mattresses, bedsheets, pillows, furniture and food supplies to help them establish their homes after marriage.
The Hisbah chief further revealed that each bride would receive a dowry of N100,000, while another N100,000 would be provided as start-up capital to support small-scale businesses.
He said the initiative was in fulfilment of a campaign promise made by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to support marriage and family development in the state.
“Governor Yusuf approved N1.5 billion for the programme, which will benefit 1,500 couples.
Each couple is expected to receive support worth about N1 million in the form of household items, food and empowerment packages,” Daurawa stated.
He also disclosed that intending couples had been sensitised on the importance of resolving marital disputes through appropriate channels, noting that the Hisbah Board encourages mediation before any decision on divorce is taken.
Daurawa urged participants to pay close attention to genotype screening, stressing that compatibility tests remain crucial in preventing cases of sickle cell disorder among children.
He added that the official date for the mass wedding ceremony would be announced after receiving final approval from the governor.

The mass wedding scheme has been a recurring social intervention programme in Kano State, aimed at assisting eligible men and women who face financial challenges in getting married.
