Uche Uwaleke, foremost professor of Capital Market Studies of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, has been appointed by the Securities and Exchange Commission(SEC) as the Chairman of the committee for the review of the National Universities Commission (NUC) curriculum on Securities and Investment Management for Nigerian Universities and other tertiary institutions.
In a letter addressed to Professor Uwaleke with ref. no. SEC/ECOPS/007/010/III/2024, dated October 7th, 2024 and signed by the Director General, Emomofimi Agama, SEC said while a curriculum has been approved by the NUC, the Commission has identified areas of expansion to better align with current market trends.
“In the light of this, the Commission has set up a committee to review and enrich the existing curriculum to reflect these advancements”, the letter reads in part.
Members of the committee include: Prof Augustine Agom of the Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Seth Akutson of the Kaduna State University, Prof Chuke Nwude of the University of Nigeria Nsukka and Dr Akeem Oyewole of Marble Capital Ltd.
Others are: Prof Oladele John Akinyomi of the Mountain Top University, Mrs Ojone Kabir, Head of Market Development Department of SEC, Dr Hassan H. Suleiman Head of Economic Research and Intelligence of SEC and Mrs Jessica Ogwuche of the Financial Inclusion and Investor Education Department of SEC who is the Secretary of the Committee.
The terms of reference of the Committee are:
1. To review the NUC curriculum on Securities and Investment Management to include Non-interest Capital Market(NICM): the Commodities Ecosystem, Financial Derivatives Market, Sustainable Finance, and Capital Market Regulations.
2. To Expand the “Introduction to Cryptocurrency” section of the NUC curriculum to reflect current development and
3. Develop a standard Capital Market Studies curriculum to be adopted by Nigerian Universities and other tertiary institutions in the country.
The letter said the committee will work virtually and is expected to submit it’s report to the Commission within eight weeks of the commencement and a sign off meeting would be held at Commission’s Head Office.
The letter noted that the Commission is committed to fostering a robust and comprehensive capital Market curriculum for Nigerian Universities, stressing that the initiative which has been ongoing remains a priority for the Commission as part of efforts to equip future professionals with relevant capital market knowledge and skills.
