A Nigerian man resident in the United Kingdom, Adedapo Adegbola, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the killing of his former girlfriend, Stephanie Irons, in Nottinghamshire.
Adegbola, 40, was handed the sentence on Thursday by Judge Nirmal Shant KC at the Nottingham Crown Court, with a minimum term of 25 years before he can be considered for parole.
The court heard that Adegbola and the 23-year-old victim had previously been in a brief relationship after meeting as colleagues at work.
However, the relationship ended after Irons reportedly became uncomfortable with his controlling behaviour.
While delivering the judgment, the judge noted that Adegbola struggled to accept the end of the relationship, describing his actions as a refusal to let go after Irons decided to move on.
The incident occurred on October 21, when Adegbola travelled to Irons’ residence on Westdale Lane West in the Mapperley area of Nottinghamshire.
Prosecutors told the court that he had earlier purchased two knives and took a taxi to the address after finishing work.
Irons was later found with fatal injuries, and police investigations confirmed that she died from a knife wound to the neck.
Officers also discovered injuries on her arms, indicating she tried to defend herself during the attack.
Adegbola was arrested shortly after the incident and subsequently pleaded guilty to the charge of murder on January 26.

Nottinghamshire Police described the case as a tragic example of domestic violence, urging members of the public to seek help early where there are warning signs of abusive or controlling behaviour.
