Nigerian singer and producer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has unveiled a new platform designed to uplift and support women across Africa’s music scene.
Named the Leading Vibe Initiative, the programme will debut in Lagos on August 8 and 9. It is currently open for applications from Nigerian female artistes, songwriters, and producers aged 18 to 35. The deadline for submissions is July 13.

Tems revealed that the inspiration behind the initiative came from her own experience navigating a male-dominated music industry with little support.
“My goal with the Leading Vibe Initiative is to help discover and support talented young women who have the potential to redefine the industry,” she said in a statement shared with Guardian Life on Wednesday.
Describing the platform as “a movement and a sanctuary,” Tems noted that it will provide mentorship, workshops, production resources, and access to industry opportunities. Participants will also get the chance to collaborate with established artistes and professionals from around the world.
Citing global statistics, the statement revealed that women currently make up only 22 percent of recording artistes worldwide, with just 12.8 percent being songwriters and a mere 3 percent being producers.
Tems said the initiative aims to bridge this gap by equipping women with the skills and support they need to thrive in various aspects of the music industry.
“We’re creating space for them to find their voices, step into their power and shape the future of music across the continent and globally,” she added.
The Lagos launch is set to be the first of many, with future editions planned for other African cities and international locations later in the year.
