A 400-level student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State, Isma’il Ishaq Magaji, has died after being struck by a stray bullet during a land dispute in his community.
Magaji, a student of the Department of Public Administration, was reportedly caught in the incident in Wawa, Borgu Local Government Area of the state.
The university confirmed the student’s death in a statement by its Deputy Registrar, Information, Alhaji Baba Akote, released to the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday.
Akote said Magaji was hit by a stray bullet amid the land dispute, resulting in his death.
Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mohammed Sulaiman, described the incident as a painful loss to the university community.
Sulaiman condoled with the deceased’s family, friends, classmates and associates, while praying to Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him eternal rest.
He also prayed for strength for Magaji’s family and other loved ones to cope with the loss.
The Vice-Chancellor appealed to the communities involved in the dispute to embrace dialogue and avoid actions that could escalate tensions.

He urged the parties to exercise restraint and promote peaceful coexistence to avert further bloodshed.
Meanwhile, the police had not issued an official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
