A housewife, Ummulkhairi Lawal, has approached a Sharia Court in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, seeking an order compelling her former husband, Isa Haruna, to pay her N120,000 dowry.

Ummulkhairi told the court that Haruna divorced her on March 27 but had yet to fulfil his obligation to pay the agreed dowry.

“He divorced me on March 27 and he is yet to pay my dowry.

“I beg the court to order him to pay me,” she said.

Responding, Haruna, a commercial tricycle operator, pleaded with the court to give him four months to raise the money.

“I am a commercial tricycle driver. I am pleading with the court to give me four months to look for the money to pay her,” he said.

Delivering his ruling, the judge, Malam Yakubu Abdullahi, said Islamic law required a woman’s dowry to be paid without unnecessary delay.

He said, “In Islam, the dowry of a woman is supposed to be paid without delay, for fairness and in order not to inconvenience her.”

The judge subsequently ordered Haruna to pay Ummulkhairi the agreed N120,000 dowry.

He gave him until October 5 to settle the debt. housewife, Ummulkhairi Lawal, has approached a Sharia Court in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, seeking an order compelling her former husband, Isa Haruna, to pay her N120,000 dowry.
