The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old ex-convict, Chidera Eleh, popularly known as Timaya, over alleged motorcycle-assisted robberies targeting Point-of-Sale operators and other residents in Awka, the state capital.
The suspect was arrested on Friday as part of the command’s intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks responsible for robbery and other offences across the state.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement, adding that operatives recovered a motorcycle, an axe, a cutlass and other items suspected to be linked to the alleged crimes.
Ikenga said the arrest followed sustained efforts by the command to track down suspected criminals using motorcycles to carry out robberies against POS operators and unsuspecting members of the public.
He added that the suspect had been taken into custody while investigations continued to establish his alleged role in the robberies and identify other possible accomplices.
“The suspect is currently in police custody as investigations continue to establish the full extent of his alleged involvement and identify other accomplices,” the statement read.
The police said further information would be made available as the investigation progressed and patrol operations continued across the state.
The Commissioner of Police, Nnanna Ama, reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring that those found culpable of criminal offences were brought to justice in accordance with the law.
Ama also urged POS operators, commercial motorcyclists and other business owners to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or criminal activities to the nearest police station.
