The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Tajudeen Abbas, has raised concerns over the collapse of the textile industry in Kano and Kaduna, which has resulted in the loss of over 500,000 jobs.
Speaking at the inauguration of the House Committee on the North West Development Commission (NWDC) at the National Assembly complex, Abbas described the decline as a significant economic blow to Northern Nigeria.
He recalled that in the 1980s, the textile sector was a major employer, but due to policy inconsistencies, insecurity, and prolonged neglect, it now provides jobs for less than 20,000 people.
“Our textile industry was once a cornerstone of the economy, offering employment to thousands and improving livelihoods. However, years of inadequate policies, security challenges, and environmental issues have severely weakened this sector,” Abbas said.
He emphasized the urgent need for intervention, highlighting the role of the NWDC in driving economic revitalization. He urged the commission to carry out a comprehensive needs assessment to determine key areas for development.
“This assessment should form the basis of a 10-year strategic plan, outlining clear objectives and actionable steps. Such a roadmap will not only steer development efforts but also attract investment, mobilize resources, and ensure accountability,” he added.
Abbas called for collaboration among various stakeholders, including state governments, traditional institutions, civil society organizations, and the private sector, to implement long-term solutions.
Additionally, he advocated for innovative financing strategies such as public-private partnerships and development bonds to supplement government funding.
“This is the moment for bold reforms and decisive measures to rebuild the region’s economy,” he concluded.
