The Niger State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the alleged abduction of a four-week-old baby in Minna, the state capital.
The suspects, identified by the police as 24 year old Chidi Johnson, popularly known as “Yaron Pastor,” and 22 year old Zainab Ibrahim, were apprehended following an investigation into the incident, which reportedly occurred on July 14 near the Mobil Roundabout in Minna.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Wasi’u Abiodun, disclosed in a statement that the matter was initially reported at the A Division Police Station, prompting detectives to launch an investigation that led to the arrest of Johnson.
According to the police, preliminary findings indicate that Johnson allegedly acted after being approached by Zainab, who reportedly sought to obtain a newborn following the loss of her pregnancy.
Investigators alleged that the suspect lured a nursing mother by claiming that a benefactor intended to provide baby food and other relief items.
The woman was reportedly persuaded to accompany him with her infant to an uncompleted building in the area.
Police said the suspect allegedly gained the confidence of the mother and another companion by offering them refreshments before taking the baby under the pretext of playing with the child.
He was said to have fled the scene through a rear exit on a waiting motorcycle with the infant.
Further investigations led to the arrest of the second suspect, while the baby was successfully rescued and reunited with the mother.

The command said investigations are ongoing and that both suspects will be charged in court upon the conclusion of the inquiry.
