Nigerian social media critic, Vincent Martins Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has shared his thoughts following South African singer Tyla’s win in the Best African Music Performance category at the 2026 Grammy Awards.
Tyla secured the award on Sunday night with her song Push 2 Start, edging out strong competition from Nigerian artistes Ayra Starr, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Omah Lay and Davido. The victory marks her second success in the category after she won the inaugural award in 2024 with Water.
Reacting shortly after the announcement, VeryDarkMan released a video congratulating the nominees but openly questioned the outcome. The controversial commentator revealed that he had hoped Davido would take home the award this time.
“Tyla again? Anyways, shoutout to Davido, Burna Boy, Ayra starr and Wizkid. You guys put in the efforts,” he said.
Explaining his stance, VDM noted that Davido’s win would have helped even out the Grammy achievements among the Afrobeats Big 3, as Wizkid and Burna Boy already have Grammy awards to their names.
“However, I will be very honest, I really wanted Davido to win so as to create balance. I like the cruise between the fans of the Afrobeats Big 3 on social media,” he added.

Prompt News reports despite his reservations, VeryDarkMan acknowledged the strength of the Nigerian entries, stressing that the loss did not diminish their quality. “The entries from Nigeria were very good songs but it is what it is,” he said.
Interestingly, the Best African Music Performance category has so far been dominated by female artistes, with women emerging as winners since the award was introduced.
