The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander in Abia State on Monday confirmed the death of one personnel in a lone crash involving a state Joint Task Force vehicle on the Umuahia-Bende Road.
This came as Otti mourned the deceased personnel and announced that the state government would cover the treatment of the eight survivors from the army, police, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
According to a press statement issued by the Corps Commander, Ngozi Ezeoma, the FRSC Abia State Command disclosed that eight officers were injured in the incident, which was caused by brake failure.
The Sector Commander stated, “The fatal crash occurred Sunday night at Isieke junction along the Umuahia-Bende road, where the vehicle veered off the road and fell into a ditch due to brake failure. Before FRSC could arrive at the scene, the police had already moved the injured to the Federal Medical Center, Umuahia, for treatment.
“The eight Officers who were rescued are receiving medical attention at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia and the dead has been taken to the morgue”, she said and appealed to motorists to avoid excessive speed, driving and always endeavour to maintain and check the condition of their vehicles, especially their brakes, before embarking on a journey.”
In his reaction, Otti expressed condolences to the State Joint Security Command and the family of the deceased officer. He described the incident as “sad and unfortunate,” lamenting the loss of life.
He also stated that the state government had ensured the surviving victims received the best medical care.
According to a statement issued on Monday by Ferdinand Ekeoma, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, “Governor Otti while condoling with the Joint Command and the family of the deceased Officer, assured that his government would ensure that the injured ones receive the best of medical attention to ensure they recuperate as quickly as possible.”
