Dominik Szoboszlai converted a dramatic stoppage-time penalty as Liverpool fought back to earn a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United in a thrilling Premier League encounter at St James’ Park.
The result earned Andoni Iraola a point in his first game in charge of Liverpool, while Matthias Jaissle was denied victory on his managerial debut for Newcastle.
In a battle between two of the Premier League’s newest head coaches, it was Jaissle’s side who settled quicker and produced the more impressive display for much of the contest.
Backed by a lively home crowd, the Magpies played with intensity and purpose, putting Liverpool under sustained pressure and took the lead through Anthony Elanga after five minutes.
Coady Gakpo restored parity for Liverpool in the 55th minute.
Newcastle regained the lead through Joe Willock two minutes later.
The Magpies appeared to have done enough to secure all three points, but there was late drama deep into stoppage time.
Lewis Hall brought down Victor Munoz inside the penalty area in the 96th minute, giving Liverpool a golden opportunity to salvage something from the contest.
Szoboszlai stepped up and calmly converted the resulting spot-kick to make it 2-2 and silence the home supporters.
