Media personality Toke Makinwa has advised individuals not to lower their standards in relationships, stressing that there are countless potential partners across the globe.
Speaking on a new episode of her podcast, Makinwa encouraged people to seek partners who align with their values rather than giving in to societal expectations or online criticism.
“There’s no need to attack someone for wanting more,” she said. “If their standard doesn’t suit you, keep it moving. There are billions of people in the world.”

She pushed back against the trend of mocking others for their preferences—especially when finances are involved—arguing that it’s more productive to walk away than to criticise.
“Don’t need to lower your standards. Honestly, listen, there are over a billion people in this world, right? You can go and find somebody who has what you’re looking for. Stop letting society dictate.”
Taking aim at those who insult women for wanting financial stability in a partner, she added, “If you say, oh, this girl is a money-hungry b!tch. All she wants is a man to pay her bills. If you can’t pay her bills, leave. There’s another guy who does what he’s looking for.”
Makinwa also said that social media arguments often reflect people’s insecurities, not genuine flaws in the person being criticised.
“If somebody is not what you’re looking for, cease the urge to start trying to pinpoint what is wrong with them, because it’s actually a reflection of you and not them,” she said. “That’s what they want out of their lives… who are you to come and tell them that they are not?”
