Afrobeats star Davido has come under criticism on social media after responding angrily to rapper Erigga over comments about musicians who built their careers without financial support from wealthy families.
The controversy began after Erigga took to X on Wednesday to recognise artistes who had to work their way up without the advantage of family wealth.
Erigga wrote, “Shoutout to all the musicians who don’t come from family money and have to grind for every single dollar they earn.”
Davido, who was born into a wealthy family, quoted the post and offered a contrasting view, saying artistes from privileged backgrounds could also deserve recognition for building successful careers.
In a post written in Pidgin English, Davido said, “No be we say make your pops no guard o. Shoutout to the ones that came from family money and still grind to the top. Comot here with that your useless motivation. Imbecile.”
Prompt News reports Davido’s response quickly drew reactions from social media users, with several accusing the singer of insecurity and arguing that Erigga’s original post was not directed at him.
@HonitelHQ wrote: “You have a very low self esteem and it is really pathetic. There is no place in that tweet where he mentioned your name. You are not the only artist in Nigeria that comes from money. The tweet isn’t even a sub but your insecurity won’t let you ignore something that isn’t about you.”
Another user, @officiaEdoOsasB, wrote: “Make Erigga nor give shout-out to Area again because one small David dey insecure? You nor wise.”

@adelambo said: “He didn’t mention your name or make any references at anyone, he was just giving an encouragement to people without any support.”
A user identified as @BoiiSavi, who described themselves as a Davido fan, criticised the singer’s decision to insult Erigga.
“Am your fan but a times you go too extreme, why insult him? Why do you like necessary drama on timeline? Bro I swear is not easy defending you here at all, Asake of yesterday is more matured than you why? You can never see other artist doing this shit here except you why? Anyway keep insulting yourself Shalom.”
@yarlo_wtf also accused Davido of seeking attention, writing: “Erriga dey on him own

stupid cunt. You have main character syndrome too. You always want to make it about yourself. This is really a sad way to live life, man.”
Another user, @ufuomayeg, questioned why Davido responded to the post, saying: “Not everything you reply to, he didn’t mention your name. Abi na anger say Spotify don deduct streams again?”
@jradun21 defended the essence of Erigga’s message, writing: “Nobody said coming from a wealthy family means you didn’t work hard. The point was simply to acknowledge those who had to build from zero. If a harmless shoutout to people without a financial head start triggers you this badly, maybe the message hit somewhere it wasn’t supposed to.”
Similarly, @maclacha wrote: “That wasn’t for you. One can’t talk generally now? Rich always come for the poor because they got lucky, EVEN CALLING HIM IMBECILE.”

The exchange has since generated widespread discussion, with many social media users maintaining that Erigga’s post was a general acknowledgement of artistes who started without financial backing and did not specifically target Davido.
