Super Falcons midfielder Deborah Abiodun will miss the remainder of the 2026 season after her NWSL club, Washington Spirit, confirmed that she is set to undergo surgery this week, Prompt News Online reports.
The 22-year-old was initially expected to be sidelined for about two months, but the club has now transferred her from the 45-day injury list to the season-ending injury list.
“The Washington Spirit has moved midfielder Deborah Abiodun from the 45-day injury (D45) list to the season-ending injury (SEI) list,” the club said in a statement.
“Abiodun will undergo surgery this week. The midfielder ends her season having appeared in nine total matches for the Spirit, making four starts and playing 320 minutes.”
Abiodun was part of the Super Falcons squad that represented Nigeria at the 2026 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations in Morocco, where she played an important role in the team’s midfield.
Her latest injury setback is also expected to rule her out of Nigeria’s upcoming 2028 Olympic Games qualifying matches against Comoros.
The Super Falcons are scheduled to host Comoros in both legs of the second-round qualifier at the Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne, with the matches set for October 9 and 13.
Her absence will come as a blow to Nigeria as the team begins its quest to secure a place at the 2028 Olympic Games.
