A 14-year-old boy has drowned while attempting to retrieve his shoe from a canal behind Millennium Park in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
The incident occurred on Saturday during rainfall, according to the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, who disclosed the incident in a statement on Sunday.
Iniedu said the police received a report that the teenager had fallen into the canal while trying to recover his shoe.
He said the boy was rescued from the water and taken to a hospital, where medical personnel confirmed him dead.
The police spokesperson stated, “Police received a report that a 14-year-old boy drowned in a canal behind Millennium Park while attempting to retrieve his shoe during rainfall.
“His body was recovered and rushed to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead.”
Iniedu disclosed that the deceased’s father declined an autopsy and requested that the body be released for burial.
According to him, the request was granted, while detectives attached to the Criminal Investigation Department, Abuja, commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The father declined an autopsy and requested the release of the corpse for burial, which was granted. CID Abuja is investigating,” he stated.
The incident came days after an 18-year-old man, Abdullahi Aminu, reportedly drowned after falling into a pond at Kofar Gabas in the Danbatta Local Government Area of Kano State.

The Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Sani Anas, had confirmed that Aminu drowned on Tuesday afternoon.
