American rapper Clifford Joseph Harris Jr., known professionally as T.I, has shared his reasons for staying away from church despite identifying as a Christian.
The Atlanta-based artist revealed that he was raised in a devout Christian environment and has no doubts about the existence of God. However, he believes organized religion, particularly church institutions, has drifted from its original purpose.
In a recent interview with gospel singer Kirk Franklin, T.I criticised some Christian leaders, accusing them of manipulating biblical teachings for personal gain.
“I have never been a church person. I grew up in a strong Christian household. My grandma and auntie were very strong in prayer. So, I know how to pray and I know the word. And I know God is real, I’ve seen his presence and his hands in my life. But I have never felt the connection with the church,” he said.

The rapper described church services as more performative than spiritual. “To be honest, I don’t think the church is real. I think it’s a business. It’s like a show. It’s like public-speaking, like TED talk. And sometimes, the clergies try to twist the word of God to benefit them.”
T.I also questioned the belief that financial offerings are necessary for answered prayers, stating that he does not subscribe to the practice of tithing as a condition for divine favour.
“Y’all telling me.. I gotta pay this joker.. for my God to hear my prayer ??? Mehn I’m outta here,” he said.
Prompt News reports he concluded by emphasizing that he sees no need for a middleman in his relationship with God, insisting that faith should be personal and direct rather than filtered through religious leaders.
