Esther Okoronkwo has handed the Super Falcons a major boost ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after making her long-awaited return from injury, Prompt News Online reports.
The versatile forward had been sidelined for almost two months after suffering a meniscus tear during AFC Toronto’s Northern Super League clash against Halifax.
Okoronkwo made her comeback on Sunday, coming off the bench to play the final 25 minutes in AFC Toronto’s convincing 3-1 victory over Vancouver.
The Canadian club struggled in her absence, managing just one win, alongside two draws and two defeats in five league matches.
Her return is a timely development for Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu, who is expected to include the 29-year-old in Nigeria’s squad for the WAFCON 2026 finals in Morocco.
Okoronkwo was one of Nigeria’s standout performers at the previous edition of the tournament, scoring two goals and providing six assists in six appearances as the Super Falcons enjoyed a successful campaign.
The nine-time African champions have been drawn in Group C for this year’s competition alongside Malawi, Zambia and Egypt as they bid to retain their continental crown.
Madugu’s side will kick off their campaign against tournament debutants Malawi at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat on Tuesday, 28 July, before taking on Zambia and Egypt in their remaining group fixtures.
