Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has urged President Bola Tinubu to stop what he described as the government’s sympathetic approach towards terrorists, calling for tougher action against insurgent groups.
Adeyanju made the call after the United States carried out a military strike on terrorist groups in Northern Nigeria on Christmas Day.
The strike was approved by former United States President, Donald Trump, who said it was a strong operation against members of the Islamic State group active in Nigeria.
Trump said the mission was aimed at stopping the killing of Christians in Northern Nigeria and preventing what he described as widespread violence against them.
Writing on Truth Social, Trump said US forces hit ISIS camps in North-West Nigeria and accused the group of killing innocent people for many years.
He also said that under his leadership, the United States would not allow extremist Islamic groups to grow or succeed.
Reacting, Adeyanju commended Trump’s action and urged the Nigerian government and President Tinubu to stop shielding terrorists or organising programmes aimed at pardoning them.
He said Nigeria needed to take firm and decisive steps to address terrorism.
Posting on X, Adeyanju said it was time for Nigerian leaders to stop treating terrorists with leniency and to discontinue forgiveness initiatives for them.
