Benin U-17 women’s head coach Idah Azonsou has expressed confidence that her side can make history by securing a maiden qualification for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, Prompt News Online reports.
The Young Amazons delivered a spirited display despite suffering a narrow 3-2 defeat to Nigeria’s Flamingos in the first leg of the final qualifying round at the Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne last weekend.
The decisive return leg will take place at the Stade de Kégué in Lomé, Togo, on Saturday, with a place at the global showpiece up for grabs.
Azonsou remains convinced her team has what it takes to overturn the first-leg deficit and earn Benin a first-ever appearance at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The tactician is expecting another fiercely contested encounter against Akeem Busari’s Flamingos as both teams battle for qualification.
“We’re drawing on our previous experiences to prepare for the future. Some of these players experienced last season’s elimination against Zambia, and they want to write a different story this time,” Azonsou said in an interview with BENIN TV (SRTB)
“We’re placing special emphasis on the opening stages of the game. We want to control the early minutes, dictate the tempo and avoid the mistakes that have cost us in the past.
“We know Nigeria is one of the powerhouses of women’s football, so it will be a very difficult match. But we also want to qualify for our first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.”
