The Yobe State Police Command has apprehended a suspected leader of a robbery gang in Ngalda, Fika Local Government Area, following a deadly market attack on January 20, 2025.
The assault, allegedly orchestrated by the suspect, left seven people dead and 11 others injured.
Police spokesperson, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Tuesday in Damaturu.
He reported that a locally-made pistol and three cartridges were recovered from the suspect during the operation.
At around 9:00 p.m. on January 20, a group of six armed robbers stormed three shops at Ngalda Market, killing seven people and injuring 11. The robbers made off with about N16,500,000.
In response, local youths mobilized and managed to neutralize three of the attackers.
The remaining three fled with injuries. The victims’ bodies were transported to the General Hospital, Fika, for autopsy, while the injured received medical attention.
Prompt News reports that the state’s Commissioner of Police, Garba Ahmed, has ordered an immediate investigation into the attack and urged the public to remain calm.
He also called on residents to provide reliable information to help track down the remaining members of the syndicate.
