The Bauchi State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the alleged torture and death of a 20-year-old man while in the custody of officers attached to a police outpost under the Misau Divisional Headquarters in Misau Local Government Area.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, saying the investigation followed allegations circulating on social media that the victim was assaulted by police personnel during interrogation over a case being investigated.
The deceased was identified as Abdullahi Adamu, a resident of Sebore Village in the Hardawa District of Bauchi State.
According to the police, Adamu was first taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Misau for treatment before he was referred to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, where he died on Sunday, July 12, while receiving medical attention.
Habib stated that the Commissioner of Police, Sani Omolori Aliyu, expressed concern over the allegations and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to professionalism, respect for human rights and strict adherence to due process.
He said the police commissioner had directed an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The spokesperson added that any officer found responsible after the investigation would face appropriate disciplinary and legal action in line with the law.
The command also sympathised with the family of the deceased and prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul.

It further appealed to members of the public with relevant information to assist the investigation by cooperating with the authorities.
