A founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Professor Jerry Gana, has said that former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi would easily secure victory across northern Nigeria if he returned to the PDP and contested under its platform.
Gana made the remark during an interview on Arise TV’s Prime Time programme on Wednesday. He cited research and public sentiment as key indicators of Obi’s potential appeal in the North.
“I’m a researcher, and I research opinions,” Gana said. “In the northern states, Peter Obi under the PDP will defeat any candidate, because our people are very fair-minded.”
Obi, who served as the vice-presidential candidate of the PDP in 2019, left the party in May 2022 to contest the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party.
Reflecting on the PDP’s origins, Gana emphasised the party’s grassroots foundations and its role in returning Nigeria to democratic governance following years of military rule.
“Many people have forgotten that the PDP was created as a grassroots organisation. In 1998, we were present in every polling unit.
We won the presidency, the Senate, and the House in 1999. We restored democracy and re-established civil rule,” he stated.
Reaffirming the PDP’s motto of “power to the people,” Gana described the party as a broad-based movement rooted in national unity and mass participation.
Addressing recent internal tensions within the party, the former Minister of Information downplayed their impact, describing them as minor disputes among political elites in Abuja.
“So when this recent problem happened, it was really among a few elites here in Abuja. It didn’t even go beyond,” he said.
Gana also touched on the future of power rotation within the party, suggesting that the North would have its turn in the 2031 presidential cycle. “Our people are very fair, and we are building a nation,” he added.
