Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested a former commercial motorcyclist for allegedly attempting to smuggle methamphetamine into Nigeria after swallowing 100 wraps of the illicit substance in Uganda.
The suspect was apprehended at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos, shortly after arriving from Uganda, following intelligence gathering and surveillance by NDLEA operatives.
The agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, disclosed the development in a statement shared on Sunday via the agency’s official X handle.
According to the NDLEA, the suspect had spent about 15 years working as an okada rider in Lagos before allegedly joining an international drug trafficking network in a bid to improve his financial situation.
Investigations revealed that he swallowed 100 wraps of methamphetamine before boarding the flight to Nigeria.
Following his arrest, he was placed under close observation, during which he excreted all the drug consignments.
Reacting to the arrest, the agency said the suspect’s pursuit of quick wealth through drug trafficking had ended in failure.
The NDLEA stated that after years of earning a living as a commercial motorcyclist, the suspect allegedly chose to become involved in transnational drug trafficking in an attempt to change his economic fortunes.
The agency added that the plan collapsed following his arrest at the Lagos airport, where officers recovered the 100 wraps of methamphetamine he had ingested before travelling from Uganda.
