How Social Media Cost Me AMVCA Award – Ramsey Nouah

Veteran Nollywood actor Ramsey Nouah has revealed that despite his long career in the Nigerian film industry, he has never won an Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award.

Nouah made the disclosure while appearing on the Curiosity Made Me Ask podcast, where he reflected on his experience with the awards.

The actor recalled receiving an AMVCA nomination in 2011 in the Best Actor category for his role in the historical drama, 76.

He said he competed alongside some of the industry’s most respected actors, including Richard Mofe-Damijo, popularly known as RMD, and the late Olu Jacobs.

According to Nouah, he eventually lost the award to another nominee, which he attributed largely to the voting system used by the organisers at the time.

He explained that the AMVCA was then driven predominantly by viewers’ votes, unlike the current format, which combines public voting with the decision of a jury.

Prompt News reports Nouah noted that the former voting structure gave an advantage to nominees who had stronger social media followings and greater online visibility.

“I never won an AMVCA. I was nominated for best actor in 76 and I lost. At the time, it was predominantly viewers choice award. Now, you can have the balance of the jury and then the viewers,” he said.

He further explained that his limited social media presence at the time put him and other established actors at a disadvantage against a nominee with a stronger online following.

“At that time it was predominantly viewers and the guy who was stronger on social media got it over us. And the nominees were myself, RMD, Uncle Olu Jacobs and the guy won every one of us because we weren’t strong on social media at the time”
