The Osun State Police Command has arrested a man, Taye Kasali, for allegedly killing his mother, Kudirat Kasali, following a disagreement over the family’s farmland.
The suspect was also accused of burying the woman’s body in a shallow grave on the farm after allegedly committing the crime.
The command’s spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, saying the suspect was arrested following an investigation into the disappearance of the mother and son.
According to the police, the alarm was raised on September 1 when Kudirat and Taye were reported missing at the Bode-Osi Police Division.
Ojelabi said detectives subsequently launched an intelligence-driven investigation which led to Taye’s arrest on September 7.
During questioning, the suspect allegedly confessed to killing his mother on August 31.
The police said Kasali claimed that his mother had been calling him a mad person and had threatened to lease out the family’s farmland, which he described as the household’s main source of livelihood.
According to the statement, the suspect allegedly said he attacked his mother with a machete, slit her throat and buried her remains in a shallow grave within the farm.
Following the alleged confession, police operatives reportedly accompanied the suspect to the farm, where they discovered the shallow grave.
The remains of the deceased were recovered, while the machete allegedly used in the attack was also found at the scene, the police said.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, ordered a thorough investigation into the case and directed that the suspect be prosecuted after the investigation is concluded.

Zungura assured residents that the command would pursue the matter in accordance with the law and ensure that justice was served.
The police also appealed to members of the public to report missing persons and suspicious activities promptly to the authorities, stressing that timely information could assist security agencies in preventing and investigating crimes.
