The Director of Glorious Light International School (GLIS), Pastor Mrs. Faith Usman, has called on parents to prioritize instilling strong morals in their children, emphasizing that such values shape them into good leaders.
Pastor Usman, who is also the founder of GLIS, made this appeal during the school’s graduation ceremony held on Wednesday in Lagos.
She highlighted that the school’s mission goes beyond academic excellence, focusing on planting “good seeds” in children. According to her, “Any parent who nurtures their children in a Godly way can never be disgraced.”
The guest speaker, Pastor Ngozi Bello, reinforced the role of parents as a child’s first teachers.
Speaking on the topic “Raising Godly Children,” Pastor Bello noted that many parents are often unaware of their children’s true character due to the distance created by their busy schedules.
“Observe your children to truly know them. Lack of observation often leads to conflicts between parents and teachers whenever children’s offenses are reported,” she explained.
Pastor Bello also encouraged parents to raise both boys and girls with equal responsibilities, emphasizing the importance of teaching them household chores and life skills in today’s changing world.
She rejected traditional gender roles, advocating that both genders should be equally involved in nurturing and practical duties to prepare them for the future.
On the topic of parental involvement in education, Barrister Mrs. Chioma Okpurum stressed that learning begins at home. She outlined key parenting practices essential for academic success:
Be actively involved in your children’s homework.
Monitor the influences and company your children keep.
Serve as a positive role model.
Okpurum, who is also a realtor, warned about the negative impact of excessive screen time on children’s mental health. She highlighted concerns about social media, where children are exposed to misleading and harmful messages, such as unrealistic beauty standards promoted through breast surgeries and Brazilian Butt Lifts (BBL).
“It is the responsibility of parents to educate their children about the consequences of such practices and to help them appreciate their natural God-given appearance,” she urged.
She concluded by reminding parents that no matter how busy their schedules are, making time for their children’s upbringing is more important than their businesses.

The graduation event featured certificate presentations to the graduands, choreography, drama performances, and other engaging activities. Parents were present in large numbers to celebrate their children’s achievements.
