Team Nigeria’s Edidiong Joseph Umoafia claimed the gold medal in the men’s 71kg weightlifting event at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Prompt News Online reports.
The triumph secured Nigeria’s fourth gold medal of the Games and the country’s second podium finish in weightlifting, following Ruth Asuquo Nyong’s silver-medal performance in the women’s 48kg event earlier on Sunday.
Umoafia delivered a dominant display throughout the competition, lifting 147kg in the snatch before producing 172kg in the clean and jerk to finish with a winning total of 319kg.
Samoa’s John Lautafi Tafi took the silver medal with a combined lift of 314kg, while Nauru’s Ezekiel Moses claimed bronze after recording a total of 310kg.
Team Nigeria has now amassed eight medals at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games—four gold and four silver—as the country’s athletes continue their impressive campaign.
