Erling Haaland was the match-winner as Manchester City maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium.
Haaland struck the decisive goal in the first half, powering home a header from Antoine Semenyo’s cross in the 25th minute. The effort was the Norwegian striker’s 300th goal in club football.
City were made to work for the three points by a determined Coventry side, who refused to be intimidated by their star-studded hosts.
Frank Lampard’s men nearly stunned City shortly before Haaland’s opener, with Jack Rudoni forcing Gianluigi Donnarumma into an important save.
The visitors continued to threaten after the break as they searched desperately for an equaliser.
Donnarumma was called upon to make further crucial interventions as Coventry pushed forward, but City’s defence held firm to preserve their narrow advantage until the final whistle.
The victory means Manchester City have collected maximum points from their opening three Premier League matches, strengthening their early position at the top of the table.
Coventry, meanwhile, remain without a point after three matches on their return to the Premier League. Despite another encouraging display, they have also failed to score in each of their opening three league games.
For City, it was far from a dominant afternoon, but Haaland’s ruthless finishing once again proved the difference as they continued their flawless start to the campaign.
