Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has said former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, is facing the consequences of decisions made during his tenure in office.
Sani made the statement while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday night, in reaction to El-Rufai’s recent complaint that friends, family members and former associates whom he had supported had abandoned him.
El-Rufai is currently being held following his arrest in connection with corruption allegations relating to his administration.
Sani, who spent four years in prison, said he understood the difficulties associated with prolonged detention, but noted that being out of public circulation could affect relationships.
“I think he has been in detention for about 200 days, and for someone like me who has been in prison for four years, I don’t think anyone can lecture me on detention and the pains of imprisonment.
“But it’s natural that when you are out of circulation, you are bound to lose friends,” Sani said.
He, however, linked El-Rufai’s current situation to what he described as his conduct while serving as governor between 2015 and 2023.
Sani alleged that the former governor disregarded court orders and used state institutions against political opponents, including arresting and imprisoning some people during his administration.
He said, “El-Rufai is paying the price for his misgovernance and irresponsibility when he was in public office.
“When you are in office, always remind yourself that being in office is a very temporary opportunity for you.”
Sani added that the former governor’s tenure witnessed what he described as “misgovernance, irresponsible leadership and the use of statecraft to attack and jail opponents” in Kaduna State.

He said El-Rufai’s present circumstances should serve as a reminder to public officials about the temporary nature of political power and the importance of respecting the rule of law.
