An Akure Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a scavenger, Ibironke Adedayo, to six months’ imprisonment for vandalising a public primary school and stealing roofing sheets from the building.
Adedayo, who appeared before the court without legal representation, was arraigned on two counts bordering on malicious damage and stealing. He pleaded guilty to both charges.
The prosecutor, Augustine Omhenihen, told the court that the convict and an accomplice, who is still at large, committed the offences at about 8 p.m. on July 15, 2026, at St. Thomas Anglican Primary School, Akure.
According to the prosecution, the suspects wilfully damaged parts of the school building valued at N9,000 before removing some of the roofing sheets.
The offences were said to contravene Sections 451 and 409 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.
Omhenihen further informed the court that the defendant and his fleeing accomplice had previously attempted to steal the school’s roofing sheets but escaped arrest.
He said the duo later returned to the premises to carry out the theft again, but Adedayo was apprehended while the second suspect fled the scene.
Delivering judgment, Magistrate O.T. Lebi observed that although the defendant was a first-time offender, the nature of the crime warranted a custodial sentence.
