The Nigerian Army has commenced an investigation into an allegation of sexual abuse involving a serving officer, Capt. Etim Essien, attached to the Headquarters 3 Division in Jos, Plateau State.
The investigation followed reports of the alleged incident which circulated on social media, prompting the Army to begin efforts to establish what transpired.
The Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 3 Division, Lt. Col. Olumide Olukoya, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday.
Olukoya said the Army regarded allegations of sexual abuse, particularly those involving minors and other vulnerable persons, as serious matters requiring thorough investigation.
He said appropriate measures had been put in place to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the allegation.
The spokesperson cautioned against reaching conclusions on the culpability of the officer while the investigation was ongoing, stressing that the military would adhere to due process and protect the rights and dignity of all parties involved.
According to him, relevant civil authorities were also investigating the matter, adding that the Army would cooperate fully with them to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation in accordance with the law.
Olukoya said the Army maintained a zero-tolerance policy towards conduct that violated the law or military regulations.
He added that any personnel found culpable after the conclusion of the investigation would face appropriate disciplinary measures.
The Army spokesperson further appealed to members of the public to avoid speculation and the circulation of unverified information that could interfere with the investigation or compromise the privacy and wellbeing of those involved.

He particularly urged the public to exercise caution in matters involving minors, noting that the privacy, dignity and welfare of the child must remain protected throughout the investigative process.
