Brentford defender Michael Kayode has revealed that the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, made an approach over the possibility of him switching his international allegiance to the Super Eagles, Prompt News Online reports.
The 22-year-old, who was born in Borgomanero, Italy, to Nigerian parents, is eligible to represent both Nigeria and Italy at senior international level.
Kayode has spent much of his international career with Italy, representing the country at various youth levels before earning his first call-up to the senior Azzurri squad.
He was also instrumental in Italy’s 2023 UEFA European Under-19 Championship success, scoring the decisive goal in the final against Portugal.
However, despite interest from Nigeria, Kayode says he never seriously considered changing allegiance, citing his strong connection with Italian football and the national teams.
“It was a very easy decision. I went through all the youth teams here. Nigeria approached me, but I never thought about changing national teams,” Kayode said, as quoted by Football Italia.
“I think Italy have always been a great national team, and playing here is an honour.”
